Gasoline blended with ethanol can be corrosive and damaging to aircraft fuel systems. Range is less with
ethanol blended gasoline. It has an affinity for water and can pull moisture from inlet air on humid days to an extent which has lead
to engine malfunctions. If you cannot find
gasoline that you are certain is ethanol free then you must revert to using avgas until non-ethanol automotive gasoline can be obtained.
It is possible today to find
ethanol free gasoline in some parts of northern and eastern California but it is not easy to do so. Southern California and New England continue
to have nothing but ethanol blended gasoline available at service stations. The use of ever increasing quantities of ethanol in gasoline is
happening across the country due to Federal tax incentives, Federally mandated ethanol target figures, and the actions of various state
legislatures.
The EPA defines automotive gasoline intended
for use in airplanes to be "aviation" gasoline and therefore - exempt from regulations requiring oxygenates such as ethanol. Therefore non-ethanol,
conventional gasoline may be transported into areas that are otherwise required to sell ethanol blends. Non ethanol 91 octane gasoline is now
